Hi! I’m Lauren

I’m a single 35-year-old looking for love AND a great many other things, too. Aren’t we all?!

35yoSeeking... my colors

Word Count: 376

Confession time: I never wear black and white clothing. Like, ever. OK, technically, I do own two pairs of black pants (winter and summer weights). But I learned a long time ago that black and white, THE daily “go-to” colors for millions of women, just don’t look very good on me. Both are way too extreme for my pale skin. You know what colors DO look good on me? Navy and cream. And honestly, they don’t just look good on me—they look phenomenal on me, ha! (I’m actually convinced that navy looks good on everyone.) So navy and cream are MY “go-to” colors, my black and white equivalents.

Obviously, knowing (and buying) my colors is kind of a thing for me. My life definitely has a color palette—not just the clothes and accessories I wear, but also my house décor. Take one step inside my condo or my closet, and you’ll find an obvious amount of navy, cream, gray, gold, chambray (denim), and pinks (blush, coral, AND salmon). AND I JUST LOVE IT SO MUCH! Literally everything in my closet goes together, and every accessory in my home looks good in every room. I’m not kidding. In fact, that’s one of my tests for buying something, if I can wear it with multiple things I already own or if it will work in multiple rooms in my home. Now, this doesn’t mean I don’t EVER buy, wear, or enjoy any other colors—but when I do, it’s in moderation (think: a smaller accessory for a pop of color, or in a colorful pattern or print). And if it’s clothing, it likely won’t end up near my face (see: my black pants).

How do you find out what your colors are if you don’t know them? Well, there’s a book (from the 1980s, of course): Color Me Beautiful, by Carole Jackson. But it really doesn’t have to be that technical. I spent a little time thinking about and then making lists of the colors I like and am drawn to vs. colors I buy consistently vs. colors that get me compliments on a regular basis. The colors that show up on all three of those lists are likely your colors. Congratulations! Now let’s go shopping.
